Half day excursions
Takwa Ruins
- we will cruise to the northern end of Manda Island. Takwa ruins is situated on a low hill and has remains of a large unique mosque, built in 16th and 17th centuries. The settlement consists also of 100 limestone and coral houses, tombs, well and the site is surrounded of a wall and has several Baobab trees. Takwa was an old Swahili town with estimated population of 2 500 people. The reason it was abandoned is unknown so far, and the people moved to Shella. We will also take you to a nice spot for swimming or snorkling an we will provide fruits and snacks. The journey can be longer if you like to stay overnight and camp in our tents at a deserted beach.
Matondoni Village - we are dhow sailing to the local fishing village and dhow building site of Lamu. Here you will see the traditional handicraft as weaving straw mats of palm leaves and making ropes of coconut. Explore the houses in Matondoni, which are made of Mangrove poles. If you are lucky you can also experience the traditional dance, that the village are famous for. It´s a 2-hour boat ride and we will provide fruits and snacks.
Kipungani - located at the end of Lamu island and Kipungani has a fabulous deserted white sand beach. Here you can swim or just relax. We will provide fruits and snacks. The boat ride is 2 1/2 hours. The trip is possible to combine with Matondoni and if so it will be a full day. You can have lunch, fresh catch, at the beach or on deck at our dhow.
Kinycka rock - we cruise under sail, or by motor, to this astonishing coral garden south of Lamu Island. This is an excellent for snorkeling and the lucky one can be swimming with dolphins. We will serve fresh fish on the beach or on deck at our dhow. This excursion can be extended to a full day. Best time a year for this trip is December to April. More..
